How to Maintain Your Carpentry and Keep It Looking New in Singapore
You have invested in quality custom carpentry. With the right routine, it will look great for 15–20 years. Without it, Singapore's climate will take a toll far sooner than it should.
Singapore's Impact on Carpentry
Year-round heat and humidity (averaging 80–85% RH) creates a challenging environment. High humidity causes materials to expand; airconditioning causes rapid drying and contraction. This cycling stresses joints, warps doors, and weakens glue bonds. Mould is the other major threat — in poorly ventilated areas like the back of deep cabinets or inside wardrobes, moisture accumulates.
Kitchen Cabinet Maintenance
- Daily: Wipe down cabinet exteriors with a damp cloth after cooking. Oil and grease accumulate on edges and around handles.
- Weekly: Clean the area under the sink — check for water droplets or minor leaks around pipe connections. A slow unnoticed leak will cause significant board swelling and mould.
- Monthly: Wipe the interior of lower cabinets. Check that soft-close hinges and drawer runners operate smoothly — loose screws are easily corrected early but become bigger problems if ignored.
- Annually: Deep clean all internal surfaces. Check for moisture intrusion behind appliances. Tighten loose screws on hinges, handles, and runners.
Wardrobe Maintenance
- Ventilation: Keep wardrobes slightly open when not in use, or use silica gel moisture absorbers inside — permanently sealed wardrobes become humid environments that breed mould.
- Sliding door tracks: Clean every 3–6 months. Dust and debris accumulate, causing tracks to stick and damaging roller mechanisms.
- Hinge adjustment: Hinged doors sometimes drift slightly out of alignment. Most hinge systems allow tool-free or simple screwdriver adjustment — ask your carpenter to show you how.
Dealing with Humidity
Consider a dehumidifier if you notice warping, sticking doors, or mould. Maintaining indoor humidity at 55–65% through airconditioning and dehumidification dramatically extends carpentry life. For storage in rooms without aircon, use moisture-absorbing products and ensure adequate ventilation.
