How to Choose the Right Wardrobe System for Your HDB Bedroom
Choosing a wardrobe involves more decisions than most homeowners expect. Get them right and you will enjoy the wardrobe for a decade. Here is how to think through each one.
Step 1: Measure Your Space
Note the total wall length, ceiling height (typically 2.4β2.6m in HDB), and all obstacles β aircon trunking, beams, power points. Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes use every centimetre and look more premium than partial-height designs.
Step 2: Sliding vs Hinged Doors
Sliding doors are the default for HDB bedrooms β they require no clearance to open. Downside: you can only access one half at a time. Hinged doors give full access but need 600mm+ clearance in front. Works in rooms that can accommodate this.
Step 3: Plan the Internal Layout
This is where most homeowners underinvest. Plan for: hanging sections (100β120cm length per person), long hang (130β140cm internal height for dresses and suits), drawers (far more practical than shelves for folded items), and shelves for bags, shoes, and bedlinen.
Step 4: Choose Your Materials
Laminate is most popular β durable and wide colour range. Lacquer gives a high-gloss or matte premium finish. Glass or mirror panels add light and space. For the carcase (interior structure), always specify plywood over particleboard β plywood is stronger, holds screws better, and does not sag under weight.
Step 5: Add Lighting
LED strip lights inside the wardrobe make a genuine functional difference, especially for dark clothing. Motion-sensor interior lights are an inexpensive upgrade worth adding.
