Flooring Guide for Singapore Homes: Vinyl, Timber, or Tile?
Flooring is one of the highest-impact, highest-cost decisions in a renovation. Singapore's tropical climate creates specific demands: high humidity causes natural timber to expand and contract; aircon cycles create dramatic temperature swings; high foot traffic demands wear resistance.
Vinyl Plank Flooring (LVT / SPC)
The most popular choice in Singapore renovations today. Pros: 100% waterproof, excellent humidity resistance, realistic wood or stone appearance, soft underfoot, pet and child-friendly. Cons: Cannot be sanded and refinished; cheaper products look artificial up close. Cost: $3β$8 per sqft installed for mid-range SPC; $8β$15 for premium brands (Karndean, Amtico). Best for: Almost all rooms β particularly bedrooms and living rooms where real timber aesthetics are desired.
Engineered Timber
Real hardwood veneer bonded to a plywood or HDF core. Pros: Authentic wood appearance and feel, warmer than vinyl, can be refinished 1β3 times, adds property value. Cons: More expensive, still susceptible to standing water damage, requires consistent airconditioning. Cost: $8β$18 per sqft installed. Best for: Air-conditioned bedrooms and living rooms in condos and landed properties.
Porcelain and Ceramic Tiles
Pros: Completely waterproof, extremely durable, cool underfoot, huge design variety. Cons: Hard and tiring to stand on for extended periods; grout requires maintenance; difficult to replace single tiles. Cost: $4β$12 per sqft for standard porcelain; $12β$30+ for large-format premium. Best for: Bathrooms, kitchens, entrances, balconies. Large-format tiles (900mm x 900mm+) look impressive in open-plan living areas.
Our Recommendation
For most Singapore homes: SPC vinyl for bedrooms and living areas; large-format porcelain for kitchens and bathrooms. If budget allows and aircon runs consistently, engineered timber in bedrooms adds warmth nothing else quite matches.
