Quartz vs Marble vs Sintered Stone: Best Kitchen Countertop for Singapore

12 Mar 2025

Your kitchen countertop takes more punishment than almost any other surface in your home. In Singapore's humid climate where most households cook daily, choosing the right material is both a practical and aesthetic decision.

Quartz (Engineered Stone)

The most popular choice in Singapore renovations. An engineered product β€” crushed quartz crystals bonded with polymer resin β€” giving a non-porous surface. Pros: Non-porous, scratch-resistant, wide colour range, consistent appearance, low maintenance. Cons: Not fully heat-resistant β€” hot pots can damage the resin. Cost: $100–$280 per linear foot installed.

Natural Marble

Unmatched aesthetically, but demanding. Pros: Stunning natural veining, cool surface (great for pastry). Cons: Porous β€” stains from lemon, vinegar, tomato. Requires regular sealing. In Singapore's humidity, unsealed marble can develop mould. Cost: $200–$600+ per linear foot. Our honest take: beautiful but frustrating if you cook heavily. Reserve marble for bathroom vanities where it sees less abuse.

Sintered Stone (Porcelain Slabs)

Dekton, Silpura, and thick porcelain slabs β€” the fastest-growing category. Pros: Fully heat-resistant (place hot pots directly on it), scratch-resistant, UV-resistant, non-porous, large slab formats minimise joins. Cons: Can chip at edges, difficult to repair, heavier. Cost: $200–$450 per linear foot installed.

Solid Surface (Corian-type)

Acrylic-based composites that can be seamlessly joined. Pros: Seamless joins, repairable (scratches sand out), affordable. Cons: Not heat-resistant, scratches more easily. Cost: $60–$120 per linear foot installed.

The Verdict for Singapore

For most households who cook regularly: quartz offers the best balance. For those who cook lightly and want the premium aesthetic: sintered stone. Avoid marble unless you are committed to the maintenance. See samples at our Jalan Kayu showroom or book a free consultation.
