What to do instead: Before your consultation, count your long-hang items (dresses, coats), short-hang items (shirts, jackets), folded items, and accessories. A good carpenter will design around your actual wardrobe, not a generic template.

Mistake 2: Ignoring the Door Clearance

Swing doors need clearance to open fully. In small bedrooms, this eats into usable floor space. Many homeowners only realise this when furniture is in and the wardrobe door hits the bed frame.

What to do instead: In rooms under 10sqm, consider sliding doors or bi-fold doors. Always measure the door swing radius against your furniture layout.

Mistake 3: Choosing White Laminate for High-Traffic Areas

White laminate looks beautiful in the showroom and terrible after 6 months of daily use. Fingerprints, scuff marks, and yellowing are common — especially near handles.

What to do instead: Consider textured finishes, wood grains, or dark tones for wardrobe exteriors. Or go handleless with a push-to-open mechanism.

Mistake 4: Underestimating Internal Lighting

A deep wardrobe without internal lighting is like a cave. You'll either leave the wardrobe door open with the room light on, or buy clip-on lights that fall off.

What to do instead: Budget $200–$500 for LED strip lighting inside your wardrobe. It's one of the highest-value upgrades you can add.

Mistake 5: Signing Off on a 2D Drawing Without Seeing Samples

A 2D elevation drawing does not tell you how the finish will look in your lighting conditions. Many homeowners pick a colour from a tiny swatch, then are surprised when the full wardrobe looks different.
